Great times in Paris…next: Bern and Zurich Switzerland!

“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”

A perfect summation of the City of Light by Ernest Hemingway.  I haven’t lived in Paris but my time here will certainly stay with me.  What a beautiful place full of amazing people.  I’ll upload some pictures when I get a faster internet connection.

Today we head to Bern, Switzerland for the Jazzwerkstatt Festival.  Im insanely excited to hear this new music.  After working on something for so long its always rewarding to hear it come to life.  We have three rehearsals this week then the festival set on Friday.  We are recording it and I’m looking forward to sharing it with everyone.

Next week, Jeff Harshbarger and I head to Zurich for a few days.  We’ll be hanging with innovative drummer Simon Berz for a few days and playing gigs on Monday and Tuesday.  Monday (2/25) we will be performing at Cafe Fur Dich and Tuesday (2/26) at IOIC.

We’ll be back home next week.  March, April, and May are gong to be very busy.  Lots and lots of stuff happening!  I’ll be curating a wonderful series at Tulsa’s Dwelling Spaces.  Check the Tour Dates area for more info.  Keep your ears to the ground for a new duo project from Josh Raymer and I.  We’ll be debuting it in the Tulsa area in April and then taking it down to New Orleans for Jazzfest in April/May.

LOVE!

Here We Go: Paris > Bern > Zurich

YYYES!  Getting excited for my fifth trip out of the USA to play music!!   This time I’m heading to Bern, Switzerland to premier 50 minutes of new music I’ve written for the Jazzwerkstatt Festival.  The set will include 3 new string quintets, and 4 new large ensemble pieces.  The string quintets are a first for me and Im looking forward to hearing it all come together!  The full-band compositions are reminiscent of the Race Riot Suite, though I’ve changed and evolved a lot as a musician and composer since I wrote the Suite.

JFJO bassist Jeff Harshbarger will be traveling with me.  Together we’ll be joined by 11 Swiss musicians to complete The Chris Combs Large Ensemble.  The set will be recorded and if all goes well there will be a release to follow later this year!

Jeff and I are flying in to Paris we’ll spend a few days exploring and soaking up one of the greatest cities in the world.  This will be my first time in Paris…so I’m insanely excited and a little nervous.  I’m hoping to have some extra time to sit down and write some music while we’re there.

We then head to Bern, Switzerland by train for the Jazzwerkstatt Festival.  Bern looks amazing.  Here’s a picture:

Yes.  5 days in Bern will be spent exploring the city and enjoying the jazz festival.  We then head to Zurich for a few days.  We’ll be staying and playing some music with our friend Simon Berz, who we met through our mutual friend and cello-genius Helen Gillet.

I’ll be posting lots of pictures and stories of our travels while we’re gone so keep checking back.
